Hockey in Springfield

Издательство: Arcadia Publishing
Год издания: 2005
Страниц: 128
Springfield has a dynamic hockey history that dates back 80 years, beginning with the Springfield Indians. One of the first professional hockey teams in the United States, the Indians were an inaugural member of the Canadian-American Hockey League. The Indians helped form the American Hockey League, where Springfield won seven Calder Cups, including a record three in a row from 1960 through 1962. Major-league hockey followed in the mid-1970s, when the New England Whalers came to town. Today, the Springfield Falcons carry on the city's great hockey legacy. Several hall of famers have skated for Springfield-based teams over the years, including Gordie Howe, Brian Kilrea, Chuck Rayner, Earl Seibert, Eddie Shore, Billy Smith, and Lorne Gump Worsley. Hockey in Springfield is the story of the teams, players, and coaches who make up one of the richest hockey traditions in all of North America.

The Battle of Alberta: A Century of Hockey's Greatest Rival

Alberta has long been a big part of the frantic Canadian hockey scene, and even before Alberta became a province in 1905, the intense hockey rivalry between Calgary and Edmonton was in full swing. In The Battle of Alberta the rough- and-tumble relationship between these two hockey hotbeds is presented in all its colourful glory. The tussle got its start in 1895 when an all-star team from Calgary journeyed to Edmonton to take on the mighty Thistles and a team of Northwest Mounted Police pucksters. Calgary came away victorious; Edmonton vowed revenge, and thus began a long procession of battling teams in both cities. Illustrated with archival photographs of the many teams and players from the far and near past, hockey fans throughout Alberta and across Canada will delight in this wonderful history of hockey's longest and greatest rivalry.

Red Line, Blue Line, Bottom Line: How Push Came to Shove Between the National Hockey League and Its Players

"Red Line, Blue Line, Bottom Line" looks at the issues at stake in the negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement between the NHL and pro hockey players. In comparing the NHL to other major sports leagues, Marc Edge suggests that hockey could benefit from adopting the business strategies of its football and basketball cousins. The owners want a salary cap. The players want the right to let the market determine their salaries. According to Edge, revenue sharing - between big-market teams and small-market franchises, between owners and players - could hold the key to long-term prosperity for the NHL.
