Indianapolis Hockey

Indianapolis has been home to eight professional hockey teams in four different leagues off and on since 1939. In that span, seven championship cups (1942, ‘50, ‘58, ‘82, ‘83, ’90, and 2000) were claimed by the Circle City, and dozens of Indianapolis icemen went on to win the coveted Stanley Cup in the NHL. And it was at Indy’s Market Square Arena that the legendary Wayne Gretzky—the “Great One”—began his professional career, skating for eight games with the Indianapolis Racers in 1978 before joining fellow ex-Racer Mark Messier to dominate the NHL in Edmonton. Indianapolis Hockey tells the story of the teams and players who have created such a rich hockey history in the state capital, from the earliest Capitals teams of mid-century through the Indianapolis Ice of today.

Michigan Ice Hockey: Celebrating the All-Time Greats and Most Memorable Moments

College ice hockey is one of the fastest, most entertaining sports on earth. Ann Arbor is home of the University of Michigan, the program that has won more collegiate hockey championships than any other. Step inside historic Yost Arena and you'll witness fast-paced end-to-end skating, heart-pounding body checks, and frozen rubber pucks shot at nearly 100 miles per hour. Yet in Ann Arbor, the action is not confined to the ice: The loud and passionate Wolverines fans truly become part of the action long before the first puck drops. Through creative chants and interaction with the Michigan Ice Hockey Pep Band, the crowd helps create the best, most imposing home ice atmosphere in the college game. Michigan's storied ice hockey program goes beyond the extensive list of premiere players and coaches that have worn the maize and blue-from the legendary Red Berenson to many of today's National Hockey League stars. From winning the first ever National Championship in collegiate ice...

Ice Warriors: The Pacific Coast/Western Hockey League 19481974

Ice Warriors tells the story of the Western Hockey League (known as the Pacific Coast Hockey League before 1952), a determined, ambitious league that at its height aspired to establish itself as a second major league, a western counterpart to the eastern NHL. Between 1948 and 1974, more than 2,500 minor-league professional hockey players skated for the 23 teams that made up the Western Hockey League. A small percentage of these players went on to enjoy substantial careers in the National Hockey League; others were former NHLers who chose to end their pro careers in the minors. Most of them, however, were minor-league lifers who played many seasons in the WHL and other minor pro leagues. Ice Warriors traces the leagues origins, rise and fall. The author analyzes off-ice influences on the WHLs development and portrays the on-ice highlights of each season, including interviews with players, coaches and fans, and statistical records and pictures from the era. The leagues aspirations ended...

Hockey Night in Dixie: Playing Canada's Game in the American South

During the 1980s, the geography of minor-league professional hockey changed radically, moving from its roots in the Maritime provinces and in the New England and midwestern states into the American south. In addition to cities like Oklahoma City, Dallas, Charlotte and Norfolk, which had long traditions of minor-league hockey, unlikely places such as Biloxi, Baton Rouge, Little Rock and Augusta hosted teams. Over an 18-year period, minor-league hockey was played in 72 different southern cities, and at one point there were more minor-league teams in Texas than in all of Canada. Yet the players - and owners - have always been predominantly Canadian. Hockey Night in Dixie examines this phenomenon with an historical overview of the period, including interviews with people involved in the founding and early years of each of the 13 leagues. There are also in-depth portraits of four teams, one from each of the four lower minor leagues that played during the 2005-06 season. These...
