The Artemisia Files : Artemisia Gentileschi for Feminists and Other Thinking People

The Artemisia Files : Artemisia Gentileschi for Feminists and Other Thinking People

Book Description One of the first female artists to achieve recognition in her own time, Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1653) became instantly popular in the 1970s when feminist art historians "discovered" her and argued vehemently for a place for her in the canon of Italian baroque painters. Featured alongside her father, Orazio Gentileschi, in a recent exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Artemisia has continued to stir interest though her position in the canon remains precarious, in part because her sensationalized life history has overshadowed her art. In The Artemisia Files, Mieke Bal and her coauthors look squarely at this early icon of feminist art history and the question of her status as an artist. Considering the events that shaped her life and reputation--her relationship to her father and her role as the victim in a highly publicized rape case during which she was tortured into giving evidence--the authors make the case that Artemisia's importance is due...

Body and Soul: Masterpieces of Italian Renaissance and Baroque Sculpture

Body and Soul is the catalogue of the exhibition held from 21 October to 19 November 2010 at Moretti Fine Art Gallery - Adam Williams Fine Art Gallery (20 East 80th Street, New York City). The catalogue presents great masterpieces of Italian Renaissance and Baroque sculpture. It was supervised by Andrew Butterfield and Fabrizio Moretti, two of the world's foremost experts of antique trade. The sculptures that the book deeply analyzes all have something in common: they combine ideality and naturalism of form with intensity and depth of expression, so that both the outer appearance and the inner life of the character represented manage to emerge. In short, not even one of these sculptures submitted to the strict academic rules which have always influenced art. They were selected because they celebrate life in every single aspect, both physical and spiritual. Among the artists whose works are here described are Andrea Del Verrocchio, Jacopo Sansovino, Andrea Riccio, Alessandro Algardi,...
The Sensual Icon: Space, Ritual, and the Senses in Byzantium

The Sensual Icon: Space, Ritual, and the Senses in Byzantium

Today we take the word icon to mean a sign, or we equate it with portraits of Christ and the saints. In The Sensual Icon, Bissera Pentcheva demonstrates how icons originally manifested the presence of the Holy Spirit in matter. Christ was the ideal icon, emerging through the Incarnation; so, too, were the bodies of the stylites (column-saints) penetrated by the divine pneuma (breath or spirit), or the Eucharist, or the Justinianic space of Hagia Sophia filled with the reverberations of chants and the smoke of incense. Iconoclasm (726-843) challenged these Spirit-centered definitions of the icon, eventually restricting the word to mean only the lifeless imprint (typos) of Christs visual characteristics on matter. By the tenth century, mixed-media relief icons in gold, repousse, enamel, and filigree offered a new paradigm. The suns rays or flickering candlelight, stirred by drafts of air and human breath, animated the rich surfaces of these objects; changing shadows endowed their...

Late Classical and Hellenistic Silver Plate from Macedonia (Oxford Monographs on Classical Archaeology)

Eleni Zimi

Late Classical and Hellenistic Silver Plate from Macedonia (Oxford Monographs on Classical Archaeology)

This is the first comprehensive and fully illustrated study of silver vessels from ancient Macedonia from the 4th to the 2nd centuries BC. These precious vessels formed part of dining sets owned by the royal family and the elite and have been discovered in the tombs of their owners. Eleni Zimi presents 171 artifacts in a full-length study of form, decoration, inscriptions and manufacturing techniques, set against contemporary comparanda in other media (clay, bronze, glass). She adopts an art historical and sociological approach to the archaeological evidence and demonstrates that the use of silver vessels as an expression of wealth and a status symbol is not only connected with the wealth spread in the empire after Alexander's the Great expedition to the East, but constitutes a practice reflecting the opulence and appreciation for luxury at least in the Macedonian court from the reign of Philip II onwards.

How to Read Greek Vases

How to Read Greek Vases

How is it possible today to gain insight into the culture that flourished in ancient Greece over 2,500 years ago? Works of art are eloquent intermediaries. This generously illustrated volume provides an introduction to the painted pottery that served specific utilitarian functions and that afforded outstanding artists a medium for depicting their gods and heroes and the details of daily existence. The key to understanding the rich language of the Greek vase is tuning into the interrelation of its function, shape, technique, and subject matter. Notable examples from the Metropolitan Museum's exceptional collection reveal the variety and vitality of the refined forms and masterfully rendered scenes that characterize these engaging works of ancient Greek art.

Images of the Byzantine World

The main themes of this volume are the identification of "visions", "messages", and "meanings" in various facets of Byzantine culture and the possible differences in the perception of these visions, messages and meanings as seen by their original audience and by modern scholars. The volume addresses the methodological question of how far interpretations should go - whether there is a tendency to read too much into too little or whether not enough attention is paid to apparent minutiae that may have been important in their historical context. As the essays span a wide chronological era, they also presents a means of assessing the relative degrees of continuity and change in Byzantine visions, messages and meanings over time. Thus, as highlighted in the concluding section, the book discusses the validity of existing notions regarding the fluidity of Byzantine culture: when continuity was a matter of a rigid adherence to traditional values and when a manifestation of the ability to adapt...
