If you want to know someone's job, you can ask him what he does for living. Someone may work in a bank, so he is a banker. He works for some bank, for example for Union Bank. That means that he is employed by Union Bank. Some people work for themselves, they are self-employed.
When people ask you to explain your job, they want to know your responsibilities – what you have to do – or something about your daily routine – what do you do every day. For example some jobs involve office work or in the opposite – traveling.
There are different jobs, people may be in charge of security in the factory or deal with customer complains or run a shop. Managers have to attend meetings and visit and advise clients.
For many people in our country working hours are nine a.m. to six p.m., so it is called nine-to-six job or regular working hours. Some people start working earlier or finish later, they do flextime. Or they may do shift-work, it means they work at different times, for example two days over there. When people want to get more money, they do overtime, work extra hours.
Most workers are paid every month. They receive their salary. Some people are paid for the hours they work. The lowest amount for one hour's work is called minimum wage.
With most jobs you get some weeks' paid holiday and you also may get sick pay – pay when you are ill.
The total amount of money you receive in a year is called your income. You have to pay part of your income to the government, this is called income tax.
